Description of Film Post Production
1. Film Post Production
Film Post Production is about post processing of finished shot or animation created with software, including adding special effects, attaching text, developing an audio, etc, so that to make it as a whole film. Post softwares can specifically be divided into plan software, synthesis software, non-linear editing software and three-dimensional software.
Film Post Production plays a very important role in the whole film production, and it is a module incorporating the film pre-production. It also means the final module, because it will make up the deficiency met and problems unsolved during the process of film pre-production, thus making it be the hardest session.
2. Content of Film Post Production
General speaking, Film Post Production includes three large parts. First is the editing of the scene, i.e. the so-called film editing. Second is the special effect production, such as special transition effect of the lens, fade-in and fade-out, iris-in and iris-out, etc. Now it also includes the use of animation and 3D special effects. Third is that after the sound and stereo are brought into the film, we still need to consider the sound production during film post production, including the appearance of vertical montage in the film theory afterwards. All these three parts are necessary component of film post production.
Traditional TV editing is conducted in the editing machine, which is usually composed of a player and a recorder. The film editor chooses a piece of suitable material through the player, records it on the tape of the recorder, and then looks for next scene. In addition, advanced editing machine has very powerful special effects, which can make all kinds of dissolves, adjust the color, or make subtitles. However, because tape recording is in sequence, you cannot insert or delete a scene between two existing pictures, unless you re-record all of the pictures that come after the inserted or deleted one. This kind of editing is called linear editing which has brought many limits to the editor. Though traditional editing has its characteristics, it has great limitations, which not only has greatly reduced the editor’s creativity, but also wasted them of much precious time in complicated operations.
3. Process of Film Post Production
Film Post Production is basically such a process of preliminary editing, formal editing, composition and composition selecting, special effects input and dubbing synthesis.
Preliminary Editing
It is also called rough editing. Nowadays’ editing is normally conducted in the computer, so the shooting material has to be input into the computer first after magnetism transition. After that the director and editor can start preliminary editing. During this process, the director will assemble the material based on the sequence of script, and edit them into a version without visual effect, narration or music.
Formal Editing
After the preliminary editing approved, it will then go into formal editing phase which is also called fine editing. First, it will alter the unsatisfactory parts coming from preliminary editing phase. And second, it will incorporate parts with special effects into advertising film. So far, the work of advertising film and scene is then competed.
Composition or Composition Selecting
The music of advertising film can be composed or selected songs. The differences are: if it is composed, the music will be unique and can match perfectly with the scene. However, the cost will be relatively expensive. If it is a selected song, though it is comparatively economic, other adverting films may use it too.
Special Effects Input
This process is rather critical, doing special effects to those scenes which is not good or cannot be obtained in itself. During this process, very professional special effects software will be used. The reason why many films we see have super strong visual effects is that they do very well in this process.
Dubbing Synthesis
Narration and dialogue is done in this part. After narration, dialogue and music is completed, the sound editor will add various kinds of sound effects. So far, the sound elements of the advertising film are all ready. The last step is to adjust the volume of all above elements to an appropriate level and then synthesize.
